How to choose a padel racket

The six playing characteristics that decide how a padel racket plays, each taught compared across the three shapes — diamond, teardrop and round. Each one is followed by three short questions so you can check it landed. Then a score, not a certificate.

The parameters

  1. Shape

    The outline of the face is the fastest way to read a racket: it shifts where the balance sits and where the sweet spot lands, so it leans a racket toward power or toward control.

  2. Balance

    Balance is where the weight sits along the racket's length — low, medium or high. It decides how head-heavy the racket feels and how easy it is to manoeuvre.

  3. Weight

    Weight is how heavy the racket is, given as a range in grams. Heavier rackets are more stable and carry more of their own power; lighter rackets are quicker to swing.

  4. Core hardness

    The core is the foam inside the racket. A softer core flexes, holds the ball longer and releases it with less power; a harder core rebounds faster with more power and a firmer feel.

  5. Face material

    The face material is the rigid part of the striking surface. Stiffer material (carbon) bends less and adds power and a firm feel; softer material (fibreglass) flexes more and favours control and comfort.

  6. Sweet spot

    The sweet spot is where on the face a hit is most powerful and forgiving. Its size and position follow the shape: round is low and wide, diamond is small and high, teardrop is in the middle.

Shape

Shape is the outline of the racket face, and it does more than change the look. It moves where the balance sits and where the sweet spot lands, which decides whether a racket leans toward power or toward control. Compare the three shapes and the trade-off behind each one becomes visible at a glance.

  • Diamond

    The widest point sits near the top of the face. The balance moves toward the head, so a diamond feels head-heavy, and the sweet spot sits higher and smaller. It is set up to reward a firm, aggressive swing with power — and the trade is that an off-centre hit is less forgiving.

  • Teardrop

    The outline narrows from a rounder top toward a narrower throat. Balance and sweet spot sit in the middle, between the two extremes. Most all-court rackets are teardrops, because nothing is pushed hard toward power or control.

  • Round

    The head is close to circular with a low, wide sweet spot near the throat, and the balance sits low and head-light. It favours control and forgiveness: an easier racket to move, and one that pardons a hit that is not perfectly central.

Shape is the headline: diamond points at power, round points at control, and teardrop sits between them.

Balance

Balance describes where the weight of the racket sits along its length — low, medium or high. It is what makes a racket feel head-heavy or head-light in the hand, which changes both how much power a swing can produce and how quickly the racket can change direction. Balance follows the shape closely.

  • Diamond — high balance

    The weight rides toward the head. It is head-heavy, which lets a firm swing carry more power, and the price is a heavier, slower feel that takes more arm to control.

  • Teardrop — medium balance

    The weight sits in the middle of the racket's length. The feel is balanced between the head-heavy and head-light extremes, suiting an all-court game.

  • Round — low balance

    The weight sits toward the grip, so the racket feels head-light. It is quicker to move and turn and produces less free power, which favours control and defence.

Low balance feels light in the head and favours control; high balance feels head-heavy and favours power; medium sits between them.

Weight

Weight is how heavy the racket is, normally given as a range in grams. Heavier rackets are more stable through the swing and transfer more of their own mass into the ball; lighter rackets are quicker to swing and easier to move late. Weight is its own axis even though it pairs with shape — a round or a diamond can each come in a range of weights.

  • Diamond — tends heavier

    Power rackets are often on the heavier side of the range; the extra mass adds stability and output when the swing is a firm one. The trade is the arm work the weight demands over a long match.

  • Teardrop — mid range

    All-court rackets sit across the middle of the weight range, keeping some stability without committing to the heaviest racks.

  • Round — can be lighter

    Control rackets are often lighter and easier to manoeuvre, which suits defence and quick changes of direction; the trade is less free power and stability against a hard-shot player.

Heavier means more stable and more own-power but more arm work; lighter means quicker and easier to move but less free power.

Core hardness

Core hardness is how soft or firm the foam inside the racket is — the schema's soft, medium, hard, and the softest foam. The core decides how the ball leaves the face: a softer core flexes, keeps the ball on the face a moment longer and releases it with less power; a harder core rebounds quickly, adding power and a firmer feel. The trade is comfort: softer cores are gentler on the arm.

  • Diamond — pairs with a firmer core

    Power shapes often carry a medium-to-hard core so the rebound adds power to the aggressive swing. The feel is firmer and the impact less forgiving.

  • Teardrop — pairs with a medium core

    The all-court shape commonly uses a medium core: some rebound for power, enough flex to stay comfortable.

  • Round — pairs with a softer core

    Control shapes often use a soft core or the softest foam, which flexes, forgives an off-centre hit and is easier on the arm — at the cost of some power.

Softer cores flex, comfort and forgive but add less power; harder cores rebound, add power and feel firmer.

Face material

Face material is the rigid material the striking surface is built from — from the schema's fibreglass through carbon at different weaves to hybrid blends. A stiffer material bends less on impact, so it returns more energy to the ball and feels firmer; a softer material flexes more, bleeding power into control and comfort. The choice is a power-versus-comfort trade, and it pairs with the shape's intent.

  • Diamond — tends stiffer carbon

    Power shapes often carry a stiffer carbon face, so the inflexible surface adds power to the swing. The feel is firm and rewards a confident, central hit.

  • Teardrop — more often hybrid or mid carbon

    All-court rackets use a blend that keeps some power from a stiffer weave while retaining enough flex to stay controllable.

  • Round — tends fibreglass or hybrid

    Control shapes often use fibreglass or a softer hybrid, which flexes for control and comfort at the cost of some power.

Stiffer faces give power and a firm feel; softer faces give control and comfort — and the shape usually picks one side of that trade.

Sweet spot

The sweet spot is the part of the face where a hit performs best — most forgiving and most powerful. Its size and position follow the shape and balance, which is why it deserves a place in this list: it is where the other characteristics come together for a particular racket.

  • Diamond — small and high

    The sweet spot is small and sits high near the top, right where a power swing's ball leaves. When a hit lands there it is devastating; when it does not, the racket punishes the off-centre contact.

  • Teardrop — medium and central

    The sweet spot sits in the middle of the face, a moderate size that balances forgiveness with reachable power for an all-court game.

  • Round — large and low

    The sweet spot is at its largest and sits low, near the throat. That is the forgiving shape: a wider area still performs when the hit is not perfectly central.

A large low sweet spot forgives and controls; a small high spot rewards a precise powerful swing and punishes the miss.
